tile backer board is ideally suited for use with our electric underfloor heating systems. They are high performance reinforced insulation boards made of waterproof extruded polystyrene, they have a fibreglass mesh embedded with a polymer modified coating on both sides, Tile Backer boards should installed onto concrete/screede floors using a rapid set flexible tile adhesive, do not use pre mixed adhesives.

The minimum thickness is 6mm for use above poorly insulated solid/concrete floors or 10mm over timber floors. When being installed on concrete or solid floors they should be stuck down with flexible tile adhesive, when installed on wooden subfloors they can be fixed directly with screws and washers, please see seperate installation guides if unsure on how to install them.

Correct insulation forms an integral part of any properly designed and well installed underfloor heating system. We recommend and supply Heatstore tile backer board, these are insulated tile backing boards for use with our under tile heating cables and mats. Our tile backer boards have a high compressive strength making them suitable for use beneath tiled floors, they also have a reinforced polymer coating, making them extremely strong.

Plywood is normally used for over boarding floorboards before laying or fixing tiles onto, the downside to using plywood is that in some cases if the grouting cracks or the sealant fails, water can possibly seep in and start to rot the plywood. In some cases a fungal growth would start to grow, this often reacts with the tile adhesive causing the tiles to become loose over a period of time. Also a minimum of 15mm plywood needs to be used for overboarding floor boards, this creates a rather large step. Now there is a great solution to solve all these problems. Our tile backer board is easy to cut and fit, its also water resistant which means that is just as effective on walls as it is on floors.

Our tile backer boards are specially designed to act as permanent insulated backing board for tiles that are to be bonded to partion walls or most floor types and even in areas that are subject to humid conditions, most other building materials like plasterboard or chipboard soon begin to deteriorate resulting in an tile adhesive failure which can lead to tiles becoming loose or even cracking.
